Cattle breed profile
Brangus
Origin : United States — Southern United States, with early development work in Louisiana
How can this breed be identified?
The Brangus looks like a beef-type Angus adapted to hot climates. It is usually solid black or solid red, naturally polled, with a compact and muscular body. Brahman influence can sometimes be seen in the looser skin, marked dewlap, slightly larger ears and better adaptation to heat.
Overview, origin and history
The Brangus is an American beef cattle breed developed from Angus and Brahman genetics. The aim was to combine the beef quality, fertility and polled character of Angus with the heat tolerance, hardiness and parasite resistance of Brahman cattle.
Brangus cattle are usually solid black or solid red. The red type is often called Red Brangus. Visually, the breed can look like a more tropical beef-type Angus: muscular, polled and solid-coloured, but sometimes with a more visible dewlap, looser skin or slightly larger ears due to Brahman influence.
The breed is mainly used for beef production, especially in warm regions where adaptation to heat and difficult grazing conditions is important.
Identification hint
Look for a black or red Angus-type beef animal, usually polled, with some Brahman influence.
